Coach McHale McGovern

Coach McHale McGovern

Is the sternest of men you have met

You can look as you like the world over

But I’ve not found a sterner one yet

With a jaw that’s as square as they come

And a look of pure stone on his face

The hallways and classrooms go quiet

Whenever he comes ‘round the place

They say he once made a man faint

Who had tracked some mud into his gym

By staring him straight in the eye

And the man never saw straight again

Coach McHale McGovern

Grows sterner and sterner each day

Raising concerns that he’ll just never learn

What it is to be joyful and play

On the Course Today

I just told my wife

Of the thing I had seen

An alien invasion

On the 17th green

I had pulled out my putter

When I saw his large eyes

Rise up from the hole

 A most awful surprise

It seems he had made

A new home under there

And interrupting my play

He just seemed not to care

So if you check my card

And notice my score

Is a thirty-five over

You’ll know why it’s so poor

The Man with the French-white Ladder Makes Stolen Soup

The man with the French-white ladder

Has made his way out, yes, once more

Filling a bag with some radishes

He takes from the neighborhood store

The man with the French-white ladder

With capers and carrots and spice

Will stew them all up in a great cauldron pot

Making soup that’s quite tasty and nice

The man with the French-white ladder

Next day, he’ll go out to the street

And serve out this fine radish soup he’s made

To each stranger and neighbor he meets

He’s a scoundrel, true, and a dastardly crook

And there’s no way to spin it around

But endeared to the hearts of the hungry and poor

He’s a chum to so many in town

Strange Orders

My customers all seem to want

The strangest sort of things

Like steak that’s made from zucchini

Or soup of turtle wings

Orders come specifically

For ice-cream topped with kale

Plus the ever-popular request—

Sandwich of lobster tail

Sure, I like creative thought

When people come to sup

But my customers’ avant-garde tastes

I really can’t keep up

Surprise First Pitch

A great surprise, as I went with my Dad

To the very first game of the year

The first pitch was thrown by a man named Carl

Who sported a white, wispy beard

I expected his pitch to sail far wide

And to drop from the chain link back there

Or to fall far short of the plate altogether

Going five or six feet in the air

But to my surprise this man wound up

With a style that was all of his own

And then threw a curveball that arced around

And then headed right down the strike zone

My mouth was wide, my eyes were, too

As I witnessed this incredible feat

Then I closed my mouth and blinked my eyes

As I watched the game played from my seat
