Outside, outside
I wish I could go
But my parents have said
Absolutely not—NO!
For there in the yard
Is a quite wild goat
Who eats all in sight
Even my Dad’s new bass boat
And my folks might be right
This goat looks tenacious
Consuming our stuff
His appetite is voracious
But what of my chance
To go run and to play?
Whoops! There goes my bike—
I guess it’s checkers today

Wish with your fingers
Wish with the soil
Wish with your strength
As you sow and you toil
Lead with your belly
Lead with your nose
Lead with the tips
Of your nail-clad toes
Reach with your heart
Reach with your soul
Reach to the bottom
Of the oatmeal bowl
Take with your mind
Take with your teeth
Take with your lungs
As you move and breathe

The man with the French-white ladder
Seems not to know where he is
All over the town, he drives all around
Climbing rooftops that are not his
The man with the French-white ladder
Drives a leaf-green car
With the ladder up top, he may come to your shop
When you’re home or away at the bar
The man with the French-white ladder
Dresses himself all in black
He’ll collect all your things in the bag that he brings
And then tote them all back to his shack
The man with the French-white ladder
In his car that is colored like leaves
Is the nicest and truly most charming
Of professional village thieves

Come to lunch with a hobbit they said
Come to sup in the Shire
Butter your bread with a blade warmed up
On the hearth of the hill-home’s fire
Come to tea with a hobbit they said
It’s a peaceful setting and sweet
Munch on your cheese at a well-worn board
With no shoes on anyone’s feet
Come to dine with a hobbit they said
For the finest company found
And stay for a sleep in a bunk underneath
A roof that is made from the ground
